Illustrative scenario
Kimi K3 procurement: separate API access from coding-tool subscriptions
This illustrative scenario shows a typical procurement process. It does not describe an actual client engagement.
A Singapore product team plans international Kimi API access and considers Kimi Code for developers who qualify to subscribe and use it individually.
Requirements and existing systems
Assume a Singapore product company with 12 engineers and 4 operations staff, all working outside Mainland China. Engineers want assistance in approved development tools; operations staff want a server application to summarise authorised product documents and draft English and Chinese support text. The company already has repositories, CI, a ticketing system and a document service. Existing systems continue to enforce code and document permissions.
The application API is the main procurement requirement. Individual interactive coding assistance is a separate, optional evaluation. Expected outputs are structured summaries, editable answer drafts and reviewed code changes. A 1M-context label does not establish accuracy, faster delivery or an entitlement included in every subscription. Sending proprietary code or personal information upstream requires separate approval.
Overseas buyer and illustrative budget
The Singapore entity evaluates the international Kimi API platform at platform.kimi.ai. Assume an internal monthly planning budget of US$1,000 across API consumption, any separately eligible developer subscriptions, integration and operations. This is a fictional planning assumption, not an official price, a Corebyte quotation, a supplier-enforced cap or a promise of included capacity.
Before ordering, confirm the buyer's country, actual users' locations, account eligibility, accepted payment methods and currency, taxes and invoice requirements. An international website or .ai endpoint is not proof of eligibility in every country or of processing and storage in Singapore. Review data location, retention and content-use terms. If the company requires restrictions on using its content to train or improve models, obtain the applicable written enterprise arrangement before sending sensitive material.
Separate the application API from optional Kimi Code use
| Requirement | Public product path | Procurement boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Server application | International Kimi OpenPlatform | kimi-k3; the buyer's API account, billing, key and rate limits |
| Optional individual interactive coding | Kimi Code through an eligible Kimi membership | k3 or k3-256k; the individual's applicable plan, coding quota and permitted clients |
Ordinary OpenPlatform API keys and balances are separate from Kimi membership and Code access. However, Kimi Code is a membership benefit and shares the applicable membership quota; eligible extra-usage arrangements can also be shared between Kimi web use and Code. Do not describe all membership and Code entitlements as unrelated, or treat either as ordinary API credit.
Code subscriptions are for personal interactive use. Official guidelines prohibit reselling accounts or API access, packaging Code capabilities as an external paid service, and non-interactive automation such as scripted batches. In this scenario, an eligible developer subscribes directly under the applicable terms. Corebyte does not supply resold Code seats, shared keys or a Code-backed server batch service. Enterprise application integration is evaluated through the API platform or a separate authorised agreement.
Confirm the international endpoint and exact model
The international K3 guide uses kimi-k3, base URL https://api.moonshot.ai/v1 and Chat Completions path /chat/completions. The administrator must confirm account access, current activation/payment requirements, the matching key and actual quota. The guide's public example does not prove that this buyer has access, and trial benefits should not be assumed to unlock the model.
For an independently eligible Code user, official configuration documents list the overseas OpenAI-compatible base https://api.kimi.ai/coding/v1 and Anthropic-compatible base https://api.kimi.ai/coding/. These are coding-product endpoints, not the application's API route. Code IDs k3 and k3-256k differ from kimi-k3; k3-256k has a fixed 256K window, while access to a larger k3 context depends on the plan. Check those entitlements before subscribing. A published endpoint or plan page is not proof of country eligibility, successful payment or enterprise licensing.
Model aliases and execution modes also matter. Code documentation maps kimi-for-coding to K2.8 Preview. For the documented K3-family and K2.8 Preview Code requests, disabling thinking routes the request to the non-thinking K2.8 Preview model. The ordinary kimi-k3 API has its own thinking rules. Do not silently substitute an alias, model or mode when the buyer requested K3. Record the product, ID, context entitlement and material routing behaviour.
Implementation and handover steps
- Approve the application API requirement, authorised documents, overseas user locations, requested model, budget owner and acceptance set. Keep any optional individual Code evaluation separate.
- Have the buyer's administrator confirm international API eligibility, terms and payment arrangements, then establish billing and scoped server credentials. Each prospective Code user separately confirms personal subscription eligibility and permitted use; no shared login or key is issued.
- Configure the server with the confirmed international base and
kimi-k3. Configure a coding client only after that user's Code access is approved, using its own documented endpoint and credentials. Do not copy keys or IDs between products, or route server workloads through Code. - In an authorised pilot, test sanitised bilingual summaries, denied document access, malformed output, truncation and rate limits. If Code is eligible, assess an individual interactive code task through normal review and CI. Verify the actual model and entitlement as well as output quality.
- Hand over API configuration, billing allocation, key rotation, permission removal and the failure runbook. Record optional Code access separately, including its owner and cancellation process. Provider, model or subscription changes require approval and retesting.
Allocate charges and handle limits
Keep application API charges separate from any approved individual subscription reimbursement. Attribute API input, output and applicable cache categories to a project or cost centre; retain cache TTL and original metering units where relevant. Reconcile actual payment currency, exchange rates, taxes and credits separately from the fictional USD planning budget. Membership/Code quota is not API balance, and prepayment does not guarantee throughput.
Distinguish invalid credentials, product mismatch, insufficient balance, account rate limits and service overload before spending more. Use bounded retries, visible failure states and an agreed manual fallback. A top-up does not resolve every 429 or an upstream outage. A separately proposed unified API requires written upstream authorisation, supported-model mapping, fees, quotas, data handling and billing evidence. Protocol compatibility does not establish full K3 coverage or permission to transfer provider keys.
Acceptance and outstanding procurement items
Acceptance checks the exact international API/model pairing, approved data path, account isolation, revoked-user access, representative bilingual answer quality and a reconciled usage/invoice sample. Any optional Code assessment must also confirm individual eligibility, permitted interactive use and context entitlement. Generated code remains subject to existing review and CI. CI may validate generated code; it must not use Code for unattended generation or batch pipelines. K3's visual understanding does not establish a native image/video-generation API or a finished-film service.
Open items include actual country and account eligibility, payment currency and method, enterprise terms, content use and processing location, available quota and negotiated support. Public availability does not establish Corebyte resale authority, international entitlement, available capacity, agreed pricing, SLA or unified-API coverage. The purchased model remains unchanged unless the buyer approves a change.
