Decide when a business workflow needs an agent
Compare an agent with a deterministic workflow and define the action contract before integration.
Compare three implementation options
A question-answering interface supplies information. A deterministic workflow follows known steps. An agent chooses steps and tools from context. Use an agent only when that flexibility has measurable value; stable rules may be easier to implement and audit as ordinary application code.
Prepare a workflow map, sample requests, system interfaces and the human effort currently required. Measure completed tasks, corrections, unauthorized action attempts and total cost. A longer conversation or more tool calls is not evidence of business value.
Define each tool as a business contract
Specify the tool's purpose, permitted caller, validated arguments, side effects and result format. A CRM lookup should verify the user's right to the record. A ticket-creation tool should validate required fields and return the actual ticket ID. The model's statement that an action succeeded is not the system's receipt.
Put approvals before financial changes, permission changes or external commitments. Assign a business operation ID and make the application check for a previous result before retrying a write. Enforce these controls in the tool service; instructions in a prompt are insufficient authorization.
Choose a current AWS orchestration path
Amazon Bedrock Agents is now Agents Classic. Since July 30, 2026 it is closed to new customers; existing eligible accounts can continue. AWS directs new agent development toward AgentCore. Check the account and Region rather than building a new-project guide around unrestricted Classic creation.
Start with read-only tools and a narrow task. The pilot output should include tool contracts, permission tests, action receipts, failure recovery and business evaluation. Expand the allowed action set only after those controls work.
