BytePlus ModelArk API setup
Confirm regional activation, Bearer authentication, Chat streaming and processing boundaries.
Verify region, activation and authentication
This guide uses BytePlus International ModelArk’s Chat API through the OpenAI Python SDK for ordinary text. Start with an authorised account, an API key for the target region and an actual model ID activated there. Record region, account or project, version, invocation method and billing arrangement. Visibility in a model catalogue does not establish account activation or available credit.
The example uses API-key Bearer authentication. AK/SK is a separate authentication path whose requirements include checking the inference endpoint ID and signing method. Do not substitute an AccessKey for the API key here. For a custom inference endpoint, verify its ID and region separately. Coding Plan configuration is not automatically the credential or billing arrangement for a production backend.
An endpoint is not a residency guarantee
The AP base is https://ark.ap-southeast.bytepluses.com/api/v3, documented as Johor, ap-southeast-1. The EU base is https://ark.eu-west.bytepluses.com/api/v3, documented as Dublin, eu-west-1. Do not describe the AP service as Singapore-hosted merely because the hostname contains southeast.
Keys, activation and inference endpoints are region-isolated, so inspect them with the target region selected in the console. The region documentation also describes preferred local processing with possible scheduling spillover, including between AP and EU. Selecting either hostname is not proof of strict regional residency. Obtain an applicable arrangement for restricted processing before use rather than silently falling back across the boundary.
Install and configure placeholders
python3 -m venv .venv
. .venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install --upgrade openai
Have the authorised server environment supply ARK_API_KEY securely. The example shows the AP shape; replace it for your actual region and do not mix regional keys. Check Chat, ordinary text and max_tokens support before entering the activated model ID.
export ARK_BASE_URL='https://ark.ap-southeast.bytepluses.com/api/v3'
export ARK_MODEL='YOUR-ACTIVATED-TEXT-MODEL-ID'
Make a minimal non-streaming request
Save this as modelark_chat.py. After approving test access and charges, run python modelark_chat.py. The SDK uses /chat/completions after this base, not /openai/v1 or a control-plane management route. The output cap of 128, timeout of 30 seconds and zero automatic retries are local example settings rather than service capacity or response commitments.
import os
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
base_url=os.environ["ARK_BASE_URL"],
api_key=os.environ["ARK_API_KEY"],
timeout=30.0,
max_retries=0,
)
request = {
"model": os.environ["ARK_MODEL"],
"messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Reply with one short greeting."}],
"max_tokens": 128,
}
answer = client.chat.completions.create(**request)
if not answer.choices:
raise RuntimeError("No completion choice returned")
print(answer.choices[0].message.content or "")
print("finish_reason:", answer.choices[0].finish_reason)
print(answer.usage.model_dump() if answer.usage else "usage unavailable")
Inspect the returned model, finish reason and usage, then assess the test answer. Truncation and filtering need distinct treatment. HTTP 200 alone does not establish answer quality, billing attribution or compliance with an agreed processing boundary.
Parse text and state separately
For a model supporting streaming, replace the non-streaming call above with the code below. Chat uses SSE and text deltas. Reasoning may appear in reasoning_content, while tools have separate incremental structures; do not concatenate everything into the user-facing answer. Responses is a different protocol requiring its own parser.
usage = None
finish_reason = None
with client.chat.completions.create(**request, stream=True) as events:
for part in events:
if part.usage is not None:
usage = part.usage
if not part.choices:
continue
choice = part.choices[0]
if choice.delta.content:
print(choice.delta.content, end="", flush=True)
if choice.finish_reason is not None:
finish_reason = choice.finish_reason
print()
print("finish_reason:", finish_reason)
print(usage.model_dump() if usage else "usage unavailable")
Guard choices before indexing and capture usage independently when supplied. Some streams omit usage; this example does not assume a universal usage option. Check the model’s current API. Missing usage is not zero cost, and a finish reason should not cause later frames to be ignored. Mark a disconnected response as incomplete and check task state before retrying.
Troubleshoot and prepare acceptance
- Authentication or permission failure: check key origin, region, project rights and model activation without sharing credentials.
- 404 or missing resource: check base, model ID or custom endpoint ID, avoiding cross-region references.
- Parameter error: start with a short text request and add supported output, reasoning and tool settings individually.
- Throttling or capacity: check quota, concurrency and account status. Use bounded retries and returned waiting guidance; do not switch regions blindly.
- Timeout/5xx: retain sanitised request identifiers, times, partial-output and completion state; avoid duplicate external actions.
Confirm retention, logs, cross-region processing and deletion under the actual service arrangement. SDK compatibility does not mean zero retention or satisfaction of a jurisdiction’s requirements. Reconcile model, input/output, cache and deployment charges, including retries and additional services. Set application output, concurrency and total task limits; test truncation, interruption, denied access and missing usage.
Only offline syntax and synthetic stream checks were performed. No key was read, no model was activated and no service call was made. Access, quality and billing need acceptance in an authorised environment.
