Build a Bedrock cost baseline before launch
Estimate accepted-task cost with token categories, retries, retrieval and operating resources.
Start with a priced workload
Collect representative short, long, repeated and failed requests. Record the exact model, Region or inference profile, endpoint, service tier and pricing verification date. Separate input, output, cache-read and cache-write usage where the model reports them. A single total-token number cannot describe differently priced categories.
Estimate each category as billed tokens divided by the pricing unit, multiplied by its applicable rate. Add retrieval, embedding, storage, tool execution, networking and monitoring costs where used. Include retry attempts and rejected or incomplete tasks in the observation. Distinguish an estimate from the authoritative AWS bill.
Check model-specific pricing conditions
Long-context thresholds, caching minimums and supported service tiers differ. A cache hit must be observed in usage fields; repeated input alone does not prove cached billing. Avoid double-counting cached tokens as ordinary input if the API reports a breakdown within total input.
A lower input rate may be offset by longer answers, more retries or more human correction. Compare total cost per accepted task together with quality and latency. A model or prompt change should be evaluated against all three.
Define control and attribution
- Bound input and output sizes and reject unsupported workload shapes.
- Limit concurrency and retry attempts; define an explicit fallback outcome.
- Track request IDs, configuration, usage and task result without logging unnecessary sensitive content.
- Set budget alerts, owners and a response procedure; an alert alone is not an enforcement limit.
Runtime Responses does not support application inference profiles; its attribution options differ from Converse and Mantle Projects. Choose a tracking method supported by the actual API. Deliver the measured baseline, estimate assumptions, dashboard definitions and the action to take if spend or quality deviates.
